Our Island

Nisyros is known by travelers as the hidden gem of the Dodecanses islands. It's location between Kos and Tilos, make it an accessible stop on any island tour. The small area of 41.6 km2 makes seeing all the sights the island has to offer even more appealing. Whether you take a day trip or stay for a week- you will find yourself falling in love with the nature and locale of Nisyros. It is one of six volcanic islands in Greece- but undeniably the most beautiful and should not be missed on your trip.

The Story of Nisyros

One of the most exciting aspects of Nisyros is its place in Greek mythology. Legend has it that the island was formed during a battle, where Poseidon fought along side Zeus. In pursuit of the giant Polyvotis, Poseidon used his trident to remove a piece of neighboring Kos and threw it at the giant. The newly formed island of Nisyros buried Polyvotis and he remains there to this day. His presences is felt by the island's inhabitants through the active volcano- which vibrates periodically as Polyvotis struggles to breathe under the island's weight.
